  1. No.  They charge because of the unreal cost of dna and tissue type testing.  In the US, the Marrow Donors Program chrages 52$ to sign up, and that is only a fraction of the cost that it takes to get you registered and get your sample tested.  WHen I was looking for a donor they said it costs near 2000$ to do the testing to see if you are a match.  When you sign up for the registry, you give a tissue sample that they test, then log.  You get called to actually donate when there is someone in need of a transplant that matches your tissue type.

http://www.marrow.org is the National Marrow Donors Program and you can find out how to sign up there.

And no, there are no legit free ones.  Anyone telling you to sign up for free is a scam.  The only time you might be able to sign up for the registry free is if there is a drive going on in your area.

I know the cost kind of sucks, but it is worth it. I did my bone marrow transplant using the public banks.

  2. Some charge a fee to cover the cost of typing your tissue.

Try these guys, I see no monetary mention on their web site:

  3. Some hospitals will cover the cost, so it ends up being free to you.  Try calling your local hospitals.

  4. Instead of looking on the internet, why don't you call your local hospital to find out information on how to donate bone marrow? They could certainly steer you in the right direction, and give you legitimate options.
