I want to drive down to Kumbakonam by road from Chennai. Please let me know the best route

I would take the ECR road to Pondicherry. Is that the correct route. If yes then where to go from there and how long does it take to reach Kumbakonam.

Drive down to kumbakonam through ECR is a distant route (approx 330 kms). In stead, you can take GST route, which goes via melmaruvattur, tindivanam, vikravandi, panruti, vadalur, sethiathope, meensuriti and then kumbakonam. The distance will be 283 kms and the travel time will be 7 hours, if you are driving in a required speed.

No need to go through ECR. drive through Tambaram, Chengleput, Tindvanam, Neyveli trunk, Vadalur, Anaikkarai straight through to Kumbakonam.
