  1. The best way is the ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao or Plymouth to Santander, then an easyish day's drive to your resort. There are so many other ways to do it. I'm travelling from Caen to Malaga soon. I prefer getting the ferry to Caen. It's a great setting off point.

  2. The direct way to Costa Blanca, coming from UK, has been described here about a million times... Still: After leaving Calais (which I think is the best to head to first), drive to Paris, further to Clermont Ferrand, take the free but spectacular A75 to Montpellier, then further on via Barcelona to Valencia. I have chosen Denia as your destination (which is a popular town for British ex-pats). The whole trip is roughly 1'800 kms and needs 16 hours driving time.

  3. The journey from Calais to Alicante is about 1853kms (1150 miles) & can be done almost completely on motorways.  They do, of course, involve tolls but are the best roads to use, if time is important.  Michelin provide a route with toll costs, petrol costs, service stations, speed cameras etc.

As another contributor has said you can travel to Bilbao by ferry from Portsmouth or Plymouth and, although it's more relaxing, it's also more expensive and there is still plenty of driving to do in Spain.
