I want to dye my black hair brown...Will this work??

I want to dye my black hair brown by using over the counter dye. Will the over the counter brown dye show up on my black hair?? I don't have time to go to a salon so I want to do it quick at home.... and plus its cheaper. Help??

it will make it shine brown in the sunlight, but thats all it will do.

youll have to get it professionally lightened.

I doubt it. You'll probably need to strip your hair of color first (there are over the counter kits for that) and then dye it.

Try putting in a lot of thin, warm brown highlights (red undertones). Buy a box of hairdye in a brown that's a shade lighter than the one you actually want (you want dark brown, so look for a medium brown), a cheap tooth brush, and plastic clips. put in at least 50 spaghetti sized highlights to lighten your head overall. make sure they're randomly placed, putting most around your hairline. It broke up my black hair so i could get it red. now i'm back to jet black because i miss the way it made my eyes and skin look lighter and healthier.

I'm not sure the over-the-counter dyes will work on black hair if you're going to brown.  You could try a auburn red.  That would look cool.
