  1. Completely free records on living people don't exist. Preventing identity theft means a few safeguards are put in place. One is that you have to prove who you are and pay for the right to a certified copy of the record you're seeking. If you can't afford the $25 for a copy off the internet, then contact the records office who holds the record and see if you can get it for less by going directly through them for a copy. Otherwise, you will have to wait until it's in your budget. There's very little about searching for parents that is inexpensive.

  2. Try ancestry.com

    freebmd.org.uk

  3. Think about it a moment.  If you could get your birth records for free then I could get your records for free as well.  So could some Nigerian sat in an internet cafe in downtown Lagos, and so too could anybody - and not everybody will be planning on using the information they get for entirely legitimate purposes.  Pretty soon the internet would be a free-for-all of people making bogus passport applications, obtaining loans and bank accounts in other peoples names and generally committing all kinds of fraud and identity theft.  You should be very grateful indeed that your details are quite hard to get hold of and you have to pay.  It's what seperates the genuine applicants from the criminals and crooks.

And no country in the world will let you bring up your birth certificate online because of data protection laws.  Companies might offer their services to purchase your birth certifcate for you and send it in the post, which is why you are probably being quoted a premium price for it.  If you want your certificate cheaply (it will never be free) then you go to the place your birth was registered in the first place at the town/county/city hall or registrar or whatever it is in your part of the world.  I'm going to assume since you put "ma" in your question you are in the USA, and I'm guessing such things are held at State or County level.  It shouldn't be that hard to get a copy of your birth certificate.  Put what state you are talking about and one of the US people on this board should be able to help you a lot more on a local level with an address to apply to.  Remember that people outside of the USA can see English questions on Yahoo too, so try and be more specific about where in the world you are, as genealogy laws vary quite a lot between countries and even within countries.

  4. Yeah they charge you for birth certificates etc....and so they should! You get nowt for free these days! lol xx

  5. UK answer.

Here in the UK we are all protected by the DPA, (the Data Protection Act).  This kind of information has never been made available to the general public and its unlikely that it ever will be.

    Hope this helps.

  6. Can't you request a copy through your local authority/doctor?  From what I've found though, even in that case there is a fee of some sort - ridiculous!! Perhaps you could request your mother's name without the birth cert, sorry I can't be of more help.  Good luck
