No it's not true. Cheap car hire isn't heard of in Australia. But look up rent a bomb!

wicket campavan have good deals and for cars rent-a-wreck and there is a place in Kings Cross sydney that will sell you a cheap car and buy it back from you when you are finished with it. It is located in the underground carpark ask a local to point you in the right direction to the carpark

No, the best offer we came across in a year of touring Australia was with Hertz of all people, on one occasion they were in need of a an ordinary car being relocated from Alice Springs to Darwin and they allowed a driver the use of the car for 2 days only, all petrol costs paid by the hirer. Apparently this is most unusual though.

It may be so for small rental operators but not the case for the larger rental companies as they move cars all over the country. However you may be able to get a cheeper rate from sydney during youth week one way to other states but they wont be $5 a day maybe $40 if your lucky.
