But I don't have the money, but I was just wondering if anyone has it, how good it is or if they prefer a different one. The nikon d40 looks pretty good too? But I would need suggestions for what lens to get also. Thanks (:

I want it because I love photography but I don't have a good camera. I have a Sony Cybershot t100 right now. I will be taking a photography class also next year.

  1. The Nikon D60 with extra lenses are on sale right now...excellent camera...

  2. I have the XTi and love it!   It's a great camera and has been a very popular model.  I would definitely buy it again.  It's easy to use right from the start with the automatic settings, and you can grow into it learning the manual settings.

What you need to do is go to a good camera store and handle some of the cameras and see which one feels best to you.   Take some pictures with them and see how easy it is to work the controls.

  3. Hi Juliana.    You are on the right track for a great camera.  I have the Canon Rebel XTi too.    It is built so well and feels good in the hands.   It is not too big or heavy but just heavy enough to let you know you have a REAL camera!!  It is so user friendly that I was able to get started shooting right out of the box.  I hate reading those manuals... and I was able to figure it all out by just spending some time working with the controls.   If you get the kit... it will come already with a lens.  the 18-55mm, which most people seem to like.   I hope you are able to save your money to get this camera.  You will not be disappointed.... and then, you will be able to give it rave reviews when you see a question about it here on Answers, too.   :))        Thanks for reading.

  4. Both Nikon D40 and Canon XTi are great entry level SLRs. I would pick Nikon D40 if you want cheapest SLR possible. And XTi if you want larger (including cheaper) lens selection. Although Nikon boosts all powerful 18-200mm image stabilized lens, just about any fixed focal length lens with fast maximum aperture won't auto focus on this camera.

In addition, XTi has 9-point auto focus instead of 3-point, auto image sensor cleaning system, and 10 MP image sensor vs. 6 MP (extra pixels are useful for cropping). Some of the most popular starter lenses include Canon's EF 50mm f/1.8II, EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, EF-S EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM, EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS, and EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM.

Canon has announced Digital Rebel XS (aka EOS 1000D) for the US market yesterday (due to ship in August). It will retail for $699 with image stabilized kit lens (EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS). Changes include:

    - Image stabilized kit lens (and significant improvement optically over XTi's kit lens)

    - Live view LCD

    - Auto ISO speed

    - DIGIC III processor with auto lighting optimizer and lower noise at high ISO

    - Improved optical viewfinder with ISO speed display

    - Improved on-screen menu

    - SD/SDHC memory card instead of CF

    - 7-point auto focus instead of 9-point
