Tips, tricks, etc. I'm open to suggestions! (especially when it comes to overhand serving).

Any drills or certain practice things I should do?

I've been playing for less than a year and I made the b-team. It was hard at first, but I'm getting used to it. I love it a lot! <3

  1. If you really want to improve your volleyball skills, you need to put in a lot of time. Volleyball is a difficult sport that requires quick thinking and intelligent players. I suggest the best way is to attend volleyball camps. See if your local high schools bring in camps and if they don't, perhaps suggest it. It's a great way to learn since you can bring in experts and get to still sleep in your own bed. If you're anywhere in western region (Montana, Idaho, Colorado, Arizona, etc.) Try looking in to CTVB (Chad Tiechert Volleyball) I've been through the program for as long as I remember and now I'm coaching for Chad. Another thing to look into is college camps. One of my all time favorite camps is the BYU women's camp, but it is a little pricey. It's going to take time and money to become a better player, it's an expensive sport.

As for tips, tricks and such, I'll give you a few without trying to write a whole novel. First, for you're overhand serving, you need to follow certain steps.

    1. Bow and Arrow stance: stand like you're shooting a bow and arrow, depending on if you're right or left handed, righties should have their left foot forward, lefties-opposite. Next, turn your feet and hips into a 45 degree angle. This will give you power to get the ball over the net.

    2. Toss, step hit: the most important step!!! Toss the ball with your left hand out in front of you, it should be tossed a little higher than you can reach. Then, step with your left foot (the forward one) and swing at the same time with an open palm.

3: Swing to target: Servers aren't tricky, you can't really fool someone as to where you're going to serve, so go ahead and face the area you want to hit and swing your arm through that area with your hand ending either on your thigh or next to it.

Sorry about the novel, hope this helps you out. Volleyball is a great sport and can get you far in life. Good luck with everything!

  2. Warm up by hitting near the wall as if you are spiking - hit it down to the ground, let it bounce up to, then off of the wall, and as it is coming back down, move to swing at it again like it was set to you, and spike it. As you get better at that, start jumping when you hit to work on your timing. And do lots of jumping drills and wall sits to strengthen your legs and help your quickness. Pushups from your fingertips will also help you build your finger strength and prevent injuries to them. As for overhand serves - practice a lot if you can at a gym using a net. Start slow and soft just making sure you get your serve in, as you get more comfortable with that, try hitting it a little harder. But if you can always serve it in - that's a huge skill righ there, don't give away points by missing your serve!

  3. keep in shape, try going to any local places where they play volleyball and practice with them also when your on your bed try laying down frontwards and hit the play upwards

  4. conditioning! you alwys need to be in shape!

  5. Purchase a cheap practice volleyball, and use this against a wall, to practice your spikes. This ball can be used on any hard surface, even against brick and concrete walls, etc.. Meet with friends, and practice with them, now you you can dig, set and spike to each other, without a net. A lot of practice with your ball handling skills will increase your abilities and confidence 10 fold easily.

Know how techniques work, like with spikes, add the wrist curl upon contact with the ball, to add spin - using the bent elbow that straightens for your spiking. Don't use your shoulder in any way... Practice the fast elbow flick, anywhere --- no ball needed.

  6. Volleyball requires, practice, focus, and teamwork. I've been playing for quite a while and i've been through the same question your asking. Ever since my 3rd year in volleyball, I've found a good way to come ready on game day. Every day, find one good hour to practice with a volleyball at home. That's exactly what I do. Take a volleyball and volley it or serve a few times against the side of your house. Get as much practice in as possible. It gets you energized, and ready for your next game. Always remember to keep a positive attitude while playing though. Other problems will come along. Hope I helped!

  7. As the others said conditioning is always good. I personally like to practice my bumps, sets, serving, and spikes against a wall. If anything practice with a friend.

When I comes to serving, try to do alot of pushups daily in order to make your arms stronger. I like to serve having my hand open wide and stiff and hitting the ball with the bottom of the palm.

    Hope that helped!
