  1. Big thing is whether  you get what you really want or need.  Youmay be able to find a copy of one on line and use it as a sample.  Big thing is to know what property you have, who you want ti to go to.  Where it does if that person predeceases you.

Are there kids?  Then need guardians.  Might need a trust (and that definitely will take an attorney.  Any special needs you might have?  Once a will is done and you die, you don't control anymore if the will is followed so have to think of what ifs.

For example I knew of a case where a couple married and had a prenup.  and then they came back and he cancelled the prenup and they left their assets to one another if the other went first and to both their kids (his adopted son and her daughter by a previous marriage) and later on  he died.  The money went to her and she chaned her will to be just to her daughter so his son was screwed out of his part.  Had the man done a trust, he could  have had it benefit the wife with certain payments for her lifetime and then be divided among the two children.  That would have done what he really probably wanted to happen.  But he had an attorney and for some reason thought he could trust her enough to leave it this way.  It didn't work.  Might have been settled out of court but it was leading to a lawsuit.

So there are dangers of doing it alone or not asking the attorney for more info and explaining what you really want to happen.

I am not a licensed attorney so this is not legal advice.  Just something to think about.

Generally must pay all debts incluiding those of final illness and then begin the bequeaths.  Can put some things in trust and bypasses probate.

Might check with your employer to see if there is a discounted attorney for employees or legal services plan.  Might call around to see what attorneys charge for a will.  Prices differ very much..  Some attorneys will do a will fairly cheaply as they get statutory fees for the probate of the will.  They will even keep a copy in their safe for  you and  you get a copy and it says where the original is.

Hoope this helps you.  Always ask about the costs though.  A husband and a wife should have separate wills and usually one must outlive the other by 30 days to be called survivor, in cases of who dies first and whose will prevails, etc.

  2. It is cheaper.  It is very, very risky.

Consult an attorney to assure that you will avoid all the many minor and major mistakes that could cost your heir time and money.

  3. It is outrageously risky, and will not save you any money.  Danger!!!
