  1. A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet- not nine.  That will be too much weight for your truck.  Whoever you buy the gravel from would most likely not even load that much for you, out of liability concerns.  Pay for delivery, its worth it.

  2. A cubic yard is 9 cubic feet, a cubic feet is about 40 pounds, so figure about 360 to 400 pounds, and a small pick-up should be able to handle it.

Just be sure to check the tire pressure before you load it.

  3. I just hauled a little over 1.5 yards of pea gravel from Lowes.  They sell the large sacks.  It indicated about .66 yards per sack.  The counter person told me it weighed 1000 lbs. per sack.  I hauled 3 sacks in my 1/2 ton Tundra.  However,  I have the Firestone air bags on my truck and had them aired up to approximately 85 lbs. of air.  If it were not for the bags the truck would have been bottoming out.  Your truck will be maxed out at 1/2 yard.  You can intall overload springs and maybe push a yard; but, I would not drive far nor fast.  Good Luck.

  4. One cubic yard of gravel weighs about 2500 pounds.

I have a little S10 pickup, and I would not recommend hauling anything over 800-900 pounds.  As an amateur landscaper, I frequently use my S10 to haul gravel, boulders, and sand, and I keep the weight of any product below 900 pounds.  This may also of course depend on the condition of your tires!

I couldn't find this information in my 1993 Chevy S10 Owner's Manual, so I'm only going by my own experience.  This site may help with your cubic yard weight question:
