Question:

I want to get back into running?

About 3 years ago I was running 4 days a week for a total of about 12-15 miles. 4 years ago I trained and then ran a half marathon. I have been lazy for awhile and at the moment I can run around a mile, walk a few minutes and run another one, but not fast like I could before.

I don't think I ever want to run a half marathon again because the training seemed to take the joy out of running. I would like to once again be competative in my age bracket in a 5k or 10k.

I am 46 (female) and have also added some pounds. What is the best way to get back into it with our burning out or injury?

  1. read some running quotes or books to get you motivated.

  2. Getting back into running can be fun as long as you approach it with ease.  Continue what you are duing, but as time passes shorten the amount of time you walk in between runs.  You must run at least four times a week to see improvement.  It can be a pain to get out in the summer heat and run as well.  So what I do is run nights at my local university track so that it is much cooler.  Depending on your schedule you may run mornings.  If at any point your knees begin to hurt try up hill running.  It is easier on your knees at any age because the top and bottom bones on either side of your knee never touch due to you never fully extending the leg.  FREQUINCY!!!  Run the four days a week but work your way up to five days a week.  Once you can comfortably run over a mile start lowering your pace and extending the runs.

In order to run a 5k well you need to be able to run at least 5 miles straight.  Well GOOD LUCK!!
