  1. Practice running on your toes each day.

  2. Go see a foot doctor and ask him/her about foot soles that arch your feet.

  3. I have collapsed arches in my feet and this caused me really bad shin splints when I started out in xc.  If you work your core and back muscles, it helps you keep posture when running.

Also do agilities.  [High knees, butt kicks, karaokes, and such]  They improve your running form.

To get better at long distance is just to not give up.  Don't do hard training everyday because you will just get worse.  Go on long runs [start out slow so you don't wear out and soon you can speed up to your ideal speed].  That was my problem.  I always went out fast and then got really tired and never really improved.  It's not about going fast at first.  It's just run for a longer lengths then speed later.

Best suggestion is run with arch supports at all times.  One of the fastest sprinters on my team are flat-footed and wear arch supports.  Just don't give up.
