I want to get digital audio out of my TV, how do I do this?

I have been looking at the logitech 5500 digital speakers.

I have a sony projection HDTV. The TV does NOT have an SPDIF digital audio out connector, but my HD Set top box from verizon FIOS DOES have the SPDIF out.

Thus if I got the digital speakers, and used them connected to the HD set top box, I would only get digital surround sound on fios TV right?

I wouldn't get any digital surround sound from xbox 360 or the dvd player?

  1. You would be better off going with speakers designed for home theater use as opposed to a basic computer speaker system.

  2. Yes, it will work just fine with both your Fios and the xbox and the DVD player.

It look slike it has only one optical and one coax s/pdif so you will have to connect/disconnect plugs as you change sources.

For more convenience, you may want to invest on a low-cost AV-receiver (with multiple s/pdif inputs) and separate speakers.
