  1. Just call the tattoo shops in your area and ask if they have an apprentice.  Then inquire as to whether or not they are allowing the apprentice to tattoo yet as you would like to let them practice on you.

Just keep in mind that finding an apprentice who is capable of putting out a tattoo that you won't have to get covered up later is going to be a feat in itself because if their work was decent, they wouldn't still be an apprentice now would they?

You get what you pay for, so if you're fine being scratched up and having a not so great tattoo, go for it.  Just know that you're going to have to pay an artist to either fix it once it is healed or cover it up completely.

Also, it's been my experience that if an apprentice can draw a really good picture on paper, then they tend to have a steadier hand and are slightly more likely to take to tattooing a little better than those who have no artistic ability.

So my best advice if you are really going to do this is to keep the design simple so it will be easy to cover up later and ask to see the tattoos that the apprentice has done on himself or their teacher (as these are usually the first tattoos they do and should be easily shown to you if you ask).

And if it's a decent shop, the artist whom the apprentice is apprenticing under will have a pretty good idea if the apprentice is ready to tattoo anyone yet or not.

Sorry, I don't know if any of that will help you, but I'm married to an amazing tattoo artist and through my years of being part of the shops he's worked in and the apprentices I've met, this is the best advice I can offer you.

  2. generally they are cheap but not free to be done by an apprentice.

you can post on craigslist or look on myspace to see if there are any artists in your area.

trick is you need to make sure they are back alley basement hacks that can't tattoo a straight line or shade to save their souls.

  3. no free tattoo are c**p and you will get what u pay for...

  4. I think that sounds like a mistake.  What happens when you get a free crappy tattoo that you have to pay to cover?

  5. You get what you pay for and may end up with a very ugly lifetime scar of poor workmanship.

NEVER get work done without seeing a portfolio first.

Looking for an apprentice and getting a cheap tattoo is a sign your not ready to get a REAL piece of art. Any decent tattoo will cost, cost a lot.

The only safe way to get a tattoo for free is to date the person who does them.

  6. the answer for this is to:

    A) date a tattoo artist or

    B) go in and get so many tattoos that your tattoo artist hooks you every now and then.

Dont go to somebody who will do one for free just because you dont have the money, you will more than likely end up paying to cover it up later and regret it because of the quality.
