I am not in very good shape. I am slightly over weight and can only run a half mile. I want to get in better shape. What is a good way to work up to running 3 miles? How can I mentally push myself farther when I am running on a treadmill? What tips do you have? All answers are greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

  1. Run at an easy pace till you feel like walking then walk. When you're rested after a few mins start running again(never stop walking). In a few weeks you'll be running the entire distance. The key is to stick with it and not get discouraged. GL.

  2. 1. Listen to music. Listening to music can easily help take your mind off the running. It's also good to get music that pumps you up and gets you excited (it works for me).

    2. Run with a friend. Running, or doing anything hard, is much, much easier if you have someone doing it there with you.

    3. Stretch all parts of your legs before and after you run. It will make your legs less sore after the fact, and you're less likely to get a cramp.

    4. Drink plenty of water, or preferred sports drink. Keeping your fluids up is very important in order to combat dehydration. Working out while dehydrated can be dangerous. The only thing is, don't drink(or eat) a ton right before you run or you will get a stomach ache.

    5. Eating healthy is also very important when trying to get in shape. You can't run a mile, then go home and eat a tub of crisco.

Don't give up and remember that the harder it is now, the easier it will be later.

  3. slowly progress work your way up.

don't eat junk food it slows you down.

walk to near by places instead of taking your car.

keep a a positive attitude if you don't it WILL be harder.

don't just run do push ups sit ups ect.

  4. I would suggest getting out and running with a partner, someone who is slightly in better shape and has the same goals as you do.  Running with a partner helps keep your mind off of running and helps your push harder because someone is there with you. Try to increase the workout by atleast a minute each day, but also you need days where you recover from the workout the day before, maybe once a week.  Start off easy and make sure you hydrate and stretch after workouts.  Get a good pair of running shoes and eat right and you will be on your way.  good luck
