I am going into my third year of college, majoring in secondary education. My concentration is in social studies, and I would love to get some teaching/tutoring experience in before I go to Italy in January for study abroad. The only problem is, almost all of the tutoring agencies I have done research on require a Bachelor's degree, which I don't have yet. And I would LOVE to have some teaching experience under my belt. Does anyone have suggestions for me?

  1. When I was an undergrad student, I worked as a tutor for my local technical/community college.  They had a "skills center" where students went to get help and they hired me as a peer tutor.  I didn't make squat for money, but the experience was invaluable.

  2. Some school districts will allow you to substitute teach while pursuing your degree.  Check into it in your area.

  3. Go into a school and offer to help a teacher out. You can do this on your own.  You don't need to have your school set it up for you.  What you can do is contact a school expressing your desire to help a teacher out in a classroom as community service.  If the public school won't let you do it, go to a private school. Find a teacher who is willing to take you in and go in there willing to help out however possible.  I'd take you in.  A good teacher would send you off to work with a group of kids to help them.  I can't think of any good teacher who would complain about having some help in the classroom for a few hours every day! Seriously, look into it and see what you can set up.  This would be great for any resume!
