I want to give my lovebird a better life?

Right, first of all here's the story:

4-5 years ago my family got a pair of lovebirds (2), now my sister is in charge of all the birds and put them outside in a cage. Bad idea. One of them died because of the cold temperature outside. So we moved the other one indoors and it's had no partner for 4-5 years (it was quite young when we got it, not sure what age). My family doesn't really care about it anymore, they don't play with it or anything or give it company. I was wondering what to do? Because if I try to play with it, it just flys away (scared of me?). It likes to tear up paper and put it on it's tail (:P), so I try to give it paper when I'm with it. I just feel sorry for it because it just sits there all day looking out the window. What should I do? My mum asked a pet store about lovebirds to get one but they said you cant split up the pairs, so how could I get another one? And even if I do it will just be afraid and try and kill it. How could I make its life better? Please help

  1. usually putting paper or sticks etc in it's tail means she wants to make a nest.  You should try getting her a mate.  She would be much happier.  Although love birds can live alone with alot of attention.  Alot of pet stores have love birds that are not paired up, so I am confused about what they said to you.  When you do get another one, watch them closely to make sure they bond.

  2. Buy it some toys and carry doing what you're doing, spending time with it. I had 2 lovebirds and 1 died about 3 years ago, and mine is perfectly happy by himself, hes got plenty of toys to play with etc. There's also no guarantee that if you did get another one that they'd get on, they can get quite vicious towards each other so its maybe best not to get another one.

  3. Lovebirds do not have to be in a pair to have good life.  The petstore is crazy.  They probably don't even know the s*x of the birds they have unless they have had them DNA sexed.  You can get another bird for your bird, but you will have to keep them separate for a good while until they get used to being around each other in separate cages.  Just put the cages close together, but don't let them touch because they could possibly bite at each others feet if they are too close.  If you don't want to get another bird, get new toys for the bird you have, and move them around in the cage every few days.  Get new toys when you can and switch them out with the old toys.  Then every few weeks switch back and forth.  If you want to get another bird, look for people that breed love birds. You need to start spending more time talking to your bird, and feed it some special treats every day...
