  1. Because I am a freelancer- I am always traveling solo - no one can ever get off work when I am looking to go abroad.  Ive traveled most of Western Europe by myself.

When I travel with people, I rent apartments because I can find decent deals.  However, travelling alone, you want to be emmersed in the public so you don't feel lonely.  So definitely book hotels or hostels.

My favorite trip alone was Italy.  I went to Venice, Florence (day trip in Pisa) Capri, Naples and Rome.  It was great- I found myself sitting at cafe tables with other tourists having a blast.

London is also great alone because everyone is so friendly there- you could possibly make friends for life just by going to the pub.

Between museums, bus tours, boat tours... plenty to do..  At least you get to do whatever you want to do 100% of the time.

If or when you start to get lonely, jump in an internet cafe and send some emails home.
