I want to go into acting and film but not sure on how to get started, what would be the best first step?

I've gone to school for film, acting and the like. I've been in college shorts and plays(this was all about 5 years ago) but am stuck away from LA, NYC and Chicago. I live in the southeast of the US. I've thought about going back to school to get into the local pipeline, I've looked into the local theatres as well but there are no auditions currently. I have the bug and really want to get back into it because I loved doing it. So back to the question, what would be the best step to take? I'd like to go out to LA or NYC and give it a go but wouldn't know where to start. Is there anybody with experience on this and give me a heads up?

well first i think you should find an agent in la, nyc, or chicago and let them know that you have experience and send them your stuff. then you should be set.

Sounds like your schooling was a waste if it did not teach you how to have a careeer. One of my reasons for not ephasizing schooling to become an actor. It would help if you lived where there was a good film and theatre scene. Like Atlanta. What you need to do is to update your resume by getting into some plays and taking some professional classes.
