So yes, I am American and from I've seen there aren't very many ways for me to get a long term visa. Are there any visas or programs I could try? I don't need the full blown permanent work visa and don't want to pay a couple thousand in fees just to see if I can even get one.

  1. hey there, yes you can get a visitors vistor but they are strict with working. you are NOT aloowed to work on them and you can get 6 month visa'a but you must prove you have enough money to stay in australia for 6 months with no work here. so alot of money in the bank. then you can get your visa extended from within australia if again you can proove that you can supprt yourself for howeva long your extension is.

you can try and find cash in hand work but that will not help for an extension but may help if you come here on a holiday 3 month visa and have no cash.

if you want to work you must get a working visa and these are hard as h**l to get into australia at the moment and take a long time and money and you also have to have a proffessional trade that australia needs when you decide to come here.

the website for all your needs is

    www.immi.gov.au

it's all about visa's and immigration.

  2. If you're aged between 18 and 30 and have a tertiary education, you can get a 12 month working holiday visa. That's really your only option. The good news though is that if you qualify, it's very cheap and you can even get it online very quickly.

  3. Previous poster is correct, Americans can now apply for working holiday visa same as English have done for years. Aimed at young travellers. Just make sure you get the correct visa, working holiday and not business or resident visa and should be simple excercise. If too old then can be more complex and dependant on many more factors.

Working holiday visa holders usually do the work no-one else wants to do for the same rate of pay so be warned, though some temp agencies may be able to offer better opportunities to skilled travellers.

    Have fun.

  4. im in the opposite position as u r. haha.

if you have any relatives or family here they can support you to come over here. iam sorry i cant be more help but i really have no idea.

i know this is mainly people from the UK but there are alot of backpackers here that stay here for 1-3 years and all they do is just backpack around australia. the majority is from the UK.

maybe you can go to the australian embassy in where u are or see/ask if you can try get a backpacking visa to australia. i think USA is included as the UK can backpack here so i guess why cant americans? when you are in a backpacking visa you can work part time too.

other than that the only way i guess is to come here to study in a university with a sutdent visa wich is pricey!
