i dont feel like talking anymore. i'm 21, depressed and tired of trying to connect with people. advice?

  1. i have felt like this also. i still have a hard time connecting with people on a deep level. i do have a few people who i have connected with, but not as strongly as i have liked. i joined a club and that has helped. as fro your situation, maybe you feel nervous trying to get to know people. so do i because i do not know who i am yet, but neither does anyone else. what i try to do when getting to know people is to use what i know about myself as a foundation for talking to people. whatever my experiences will be with these people will help shape the new me and help me find myself. and if people do not like me in the process, then fu*k 'em. i think wanting to go mute is just frustration at not connecting. also, i think one day people like us will find our true inner selves. we are like a catch 22. we may not connect with everyone, which sucks, but because it is hard to find out who we are, were are unique people, which i think is a cool thing. you may find out after hanging out with others that you are not so different after all. and if you are self conscious about meeting people, then remember that whatever their opinions of you are secondary and those you have of yourself are primary. you cant do anything to change their opinions and face it, they will not care that much about you anyway. be yourself. its a lot more complicated than this, but i guess i can not go into too much details... good luck! edit: i agree with whoever said to never look back and go straight ahead. not caring about being a foster kid and moving on with life as if being in that situation doesnt suck seems imaginable. but you have to move ahead. you have to imagine the worst possible thing happening to you and getting over it even if you feel its the wrong thing to do. you must never forget, but carry on. seems selfish but the only way we can survive is to care about ourselves first.

There's certainly nothing wrong with a certain amount of cynicism with the way people are today.  If you feel like withdrawing a little and having some alone time, that's perfectly fine--no matter what the drug marketers want you to believe.  Having said that, however, if you're seriously depressed and this desire to withdraw from humanity grows to something major, then you should probably consider seeking therapy.

    EDIT (based on questioner's edit): It seems possible that one reason you're feeling adrift is because you're lacking a "familial connection", or whatever you might call it.  Frankly, I'd not worry about it.  (Easy for me to say, right?)  Stop looking behind you and start looking ahead.  You're your own person, with your own unique future in front of you.  Make the most of it, and to h**l with the nay-sayers!

    Really, your young and have alot to look forward to in your life. Pleaz don't let the ignorant s****.amp;#039;S get to you. It sucks realizing the first time that most people aren't worth your time nor energy.

  6. Quit trying so hard. Make your own place in the world.

    Define your interests, your likes, your passion, then pursue them.

    And give. Give to others. You will find more friends doing what you love to do (school/college? Art? Volunteer work?) than just trying to fit in.

    Why? Because when you do what you love, you will meet others who love what you do! You will be surrounded by people who will find you interesting and you in turn will be interested in them.
