I am on a fairly tight budget, would like learn how to surf, and am fluent in spanish. Mostly I want to lay on the beach, eat some good food and soak up the culture. I don't really want to go where everybody else goes (cancun, cabo, acapulco, etc.). I also don't want to end up in some backwoods town where I'm almost sure to get robbed.

  1. 2 years ago I went to Manzanillo.  It is a bit south of Puerta Vallerta and a very nice city.  Statistically the safest in Mexico.  Very low crime and almost no street beggers.  I am not sure how good the surfing is there, but there are some very nice hotels from the basic to 5-star all-inclusive (US$30 to $400).  Look at tripadvisor for more details and specific hotel reviews.

  2. San Juan de Lima, near Guadalajara Mexico. You far enough as to have peace n quiet, but close enought to have all the comforts of home.

  3. I went to Playa del Carmen and Stayed in a cancun hotel. So it was nice.

  4. Go to Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. Quite reasonable prices and they have the best waves for surfing in Mexico. Other possibilities are Puerto Angel and Zipolite, also at the Pacific coast of Oaxaca; very cheap and there is nothing to do but relax.
