I want to go on long distance bike rides in which I cary all of my equipment such as a sleeping bag, food, clothes, and possibly a small tent. I would prefer to use a bike with thin weels but I'm not sure if that is possible.

  1. Something else you may wish to consider is a gas powered bicycle motor.  Right now there are over 100 motors for sale on eBay.

  2. i think its better to ride on mountain bikes coz mountain bikes have diff. gears, you can use it going uphill without much effort. good luck

  3. You want a touring bike. They are much like a road bike but usually have slightly bigger wheel/tire sets, some lower gearing, and provisions for racks, panniers, etc.

    HTH

  4. You'll need pannier racks, which fit over the rear wheel. I'd also consider getting one for the front wheel if you'll be carrying a lot.

Also a Steel bike with a long wheelbase and a large range of gears is best for this task

  5. Yes it is possible to use a road type bike for touring. There are touring bikes made just for this. A touring specific bike is very much a road bike. Steel is the favorite frame material for it's comfortable ride and the ability to clamp racks on. The geometry is a little slack for comfort and stability. Typically a tourer will have eyelets for mounting racks, strudier wheels and more robust tires to withstand the added weight and reduce flating. Most will have triple chain rings and wide range cassettes for lower gearing too.

Back in the day I toured on my racing bike with sew-ups (not a tourer) and did fine. I packed a small tent, sleeping bag etc.
