  1. aviemore

    Glencoe

    try the web.

there are direct trains from South. Kings Cross to aviemore

  2. France!

I live near Aviemore and ski at (Cairngorm Mountain) regularly as it is on my doorstep, but that's as far as it goes.

The only reason I would ski here is if you were coming here anyway. You will get a holiday in the alps for about the same price and some decent weather, well maintained lifts, even just maintained lifts, well groomed runs and some decent snow.

I love Scotland, but it really isn't a good bet for a planned holiday anymore.

However, when it is nice it is a lovely place to ski. Both of those days last year were great. ;o)

  3. Avimore

  4. I live in Scotland and I ski in all the resorts regulary. There is not a `Glenshee Hotel` on the slopes as someone has said, there is a hotel a `The Spittal of Glenshee` around 2 miles from the resort by road.

Aviemore is a great resort and I would also recommend the skiing there, not really for the slopes themselves, as Glenshee and The Lecht are just as good, but Aviemore itself is the best place for tourists, with good hotels and restaurants and the new McDonald resort, which has other facilities too.

If you have never skied in Scotland, please be aware that it is not like skiing abroad. The elements effect you much more in Scotland, often you are skiing on ice, and in high winds, chairlifts often close if the winds are high but the poma tows tend to stay open unless it is really bad.

Take extra thermals, and you will often find even if it is a lovely day in the car park, it could be a gale at the top, so wear all your layers. Dont get me wrong it is sometimes lovely weather too and the scenery is great.

It`s great to support our local slopes as they need all the skiers they can get.

  5. There is snow on all the slopes at the moment and more forecast. Check out ITV or BBC weather. Aviemore has been rehashed and has some good hotels. There's more to do there than just ski. If you go to Glenshee, there's the Glenshee Hotel right at the slopes, can be a bit pricey. Be aware there is a big difference between Scottish Skiing and continental skiing. It gets REALLY cold up here. There's usually a distinct lack of sunlight. The slopes get closed if the winds get too high. Check the web site and see what's on offer. Check Tripadvisor for more information and check the usual companies for travel deals. If you are driving up, give yourself plenty of time. The roads are good right up to Inverness but can be dodgy overnight as it freezes. The A9 can be a hassle as it is not dualled the whole way from Perth northwards.
