I am going to Canada for three weeks in October and I have heard the best place to see Polar Bears is in Churchill.

But I have no idea on how to get there or how much it is going to cost!!

Can anyone here give me some advise please?

  1. Yes, it is probably the best and least expensive place in Canada to see polar bears.  And at chruchill you will be almost certain to see them.  Tours will be arranged for you.  Here are a couple of links that will help you with these plans.  Contact one of the hotels or some other agency in Churchill and they will give you all the information you need.

There are no roads to Churchill but you can follow paved Highway #6 as far north as Thompson, Manitoba or continue along unpaved roads to the community of Gillam. From Thompson, you can fly to Churchill or hop aboard the train for an overnight to our community. Train service is also available from Gillam.

The flight from Winnipeg to Churchill is approximately two hours in length. Two airlines, Calm Air International and Kivalliq Air, operate daily flights to and from Winnipeg and into the Kivalliq District of Nunavut. Calm Air also offers three flights a week to and from Thompson.

The Via Rail train, known as the Bayline or the Muskeg Special, departs Winnipeg for Churchill every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. The train ride is approximately 36 hours long but the train is commonly late, usually arriving around 11am. The train arrives and departs Churchill every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays.

The train trip from Winnipeg is almost two days long, but that alone makes it an adventure.
