  1. Toscana:is one of the most baeutiful areas of Italy!Firenze is very beautiful, Siena too. Round Siena there is also a wonderful and insolit countryside, a lot of tourists every year come here...

try all the food, it is very very very good!but attention: is easy to spend too much...

  2. In Florence you have to see:

    Piazza della Signoria

    Palazzo Vecchio

    Galleria degli Uffizi

    S. Croce (Giotto, Cimabue)

    Museo del Bargello (Giotto, Masaccio)

    S. Maria Novella

    Duomo & Battistero

    Museo Opera del Duomo (Donatello)

    Galleria dell'Accademia (Michelangelo)

    S. Lorenzo (sagrestia, biblioteca Michelangelo, cappelle Medici)

    Palazzo Strozzi

    Via Tornabuoni

    Museo S. Marco (Beato Angelico)

    Palazzo Medici (cappella Magi)

    Orsanmichele

    Ponte Vecchio

    Galleria di Palazzo Pitti

    Gardino di Boboli

  3. Personally I like Verona amongst other ancient buildings it has the original Romeo and Juliet setting a huge amplitheatre. There is also a market good resturants and designer shops.

  4. In Italy you are spoiled for choice - wherever you go you will eat well and walking is easy everywhere and you can see all the beautiful buildings without paying anything. In the evenings the towns and cities fill up with Italian families out walking about.

For each place, rather than me writing a list of all that's there to see I suggest you go to the Italian tourist board website where you will find descriptions and pictures of everything and links to the city tourist boards.

Florence is a really good choice for a visit, it is stunning and there are plenty of things to see and do. Be warned though by early May the queues for some of the major attractions will be already be really long. You can beat these by booking your tickets before you go:

    try www.florenceart.it

Another possibility would be to go to Rome - it is absolutely amazing as well. Some of the ancient Roman sites are free and so is sitting on the Spanish steps or by the Trevi fountain. If you decide to go then here are a couple of tips: if visiting the colosseum buy your ticket at the palatino the queue is much shorter. The Vatican City is usually closed on a Sunday but if you go here get a guide, the Vatican museum is so big that you will just get overwhelmed.

Apart from these two big cities, one of my favourite long weekends is to stay in Verona. It is small but beautiful and you get to know your way round really easily. But the other good thing is that it is only an hour away from Venice by train (or Milan in the other direction), so you can get to 2 or 3 cities in one weekend. Venice is another beautiful place well worth visiting and it is unique.  By going from Verona you can cut down on the cost of accommodation etc.of staying in Venice itself. Use the same website as above to book tickets if you want to see the sites.

You seem to want cities, architecture and history but you should know that Sardinia is renowned for being stunning in May but that is because of the wild flowers and maybe that's not your taste.

As for finding reasonable accommodation I would just shop around for a good deal both with the airline and try octopustravel, expedia and lastminute for example. You can find some really cheap deals and those hotels tend to be reasonable. That way you can pay up before you go, hopefully leaving a bit more cash to spend when you get there.

Have a lovely time wherever you choose.

  5. Florence and Rome to see the works of Michaelangelo and Roman ruins. Pompeii is good too

  6. come to southern italy and enjoy traditional italy...

    also great for antique site

    pompeii

    herculaneum

    paestum

    sabia di castelmare

food in the south is wonderful if you like sea food the amalfi coast has the best

traditional pizza cooked in a wood fired oven not this pizza hut rubbish..

come in the summer when there are loads of festas, saint days with concerts more eating, fireworks and markets

also sagras, traditional food festivals again more eating, music, merryment, wine..

i live in the south of italy and the summer months are a joy.. as it's so warm it is an outdoor society.. eating and drinking and having fun.. i love it

  7. Mark is right, those places are the best in Florence.

For food...in Italy everywhere you go you can eat fantastic food: if you really go to Florence, you can ask for "bistecca alla fiorentina" or "fiorentina" (it's the same) that is a grilled steak 4-5 cm high veeeeery good!

Bye and have a nice journey!

  8. Very good suggestions have been made! When I was in Florence I liked the Accademia the best.

This is probably a given, but make sure you eat a ton of gelati while you're there!

  9. I went to Rome last year and would recommend it to anyone. You can visit the Vatican, Colosseum, Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain, the Capitoline Museums and the Pantheon. I went for 3 days and it wasn't long enough.
