My wife and I want to go to Italy in Sicily around September for 1 month on holidays, which is a good airline and a reasonable price and when should we book it?

Assuming you're in Sydney, Australia and not in Canada, you could do this for around $2300 USD (2,648 Australian) by booking KLM to Amsterdam and then to Palermo via Florence (also KLM & Meridiana). For other options, it appears that the Sydney to Europe will be about the cost of the whole trip through Amsterdam.

Air France $2540 USD (2,925 Australian) - Sydney to Singapore to Paris to Rome to Palermo

Another option around the same price is Singapore Airlines and KLM to Prague, then Prague to Palermo via Rome or Milan)

If you can find a reasonalbe flight into one of the cities that Ryanair  (http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/ ) flies to Palermo from, they have inexpensive flights to Sicily. Another option would be TUI  (http://www.tuifly.com/en/index.html ).
