Okay, I'm debating on what I want to do in the next year or so before i go to college, and either I am doing a program in Africa, or my uncle said he's willing to take me to Japan or Thailand, and I'd love to see Japan.

I would be an 18 year old student, and I'd want to visit Tokyo and Kyoto. (That's it). Probably making this whole trip around a week? Maybe more or less? How much around would it be for the whole trip in total? Visa, Round Trip Flight, Hotel, and the trip from Tokyo to Kyoto? Isn't there a such thing as discounted plane flights for Students? Any other discounts or deals that I should be aware of?

Thanks!

  1. You'd still pay full plane fare for the trip because to my knowledge there isn't any discount for students. If you visit during the spring break season in March, you can get a rather cheap fare because it's off season. Ive gotten tickets to Japan for under 1000 dollars because I've gone during the off season. It also largely depends on the airport you fly to. Flying to Tokyo Narita will cost you a bunch but will cost you more if you fly to the Kansai airport (near Osaka and Kyoto). I'd say your ticket if you go round trip to Narita would be about $1200 or so. Go to www.iace-usa.com. They specialize in Japan travel and can hook you up with some discounts.

You are an American citizen right? You don't need a visa in this case. Just present your passport and the paperwork they give you on the flight.

If you're flying in and out of Tokyo Narita, then you'd have to take a Shinkansen (bullet train) to Kyoto. It travels at about 180 mph and takes 2 hours and 45 minutes to reach Kyoto. The one way fare is about 13200yen (about 130 dollars). If you fly into Tokyo Narita airport, spend a few days in Tokyo, then go to Kyoto and fly out of the Kansai airport, you'd save a bit of money on the bullet train because otherwise you'd have to pay the 130 dollars to get a ticket BACK to Kyoto. That's 260 dollars there.

Or you could buy a JR rail pass from the IACE travel agent. This pass allows you unlimited train rides on all JR trains, including the bullet trains (excluding the Nozomi one).  This is about 250 dollars for 1 week travel but it saves you money on Shinkansen tickets and regular train tickets. It also is good for the Narita express, the train that connects the airport to Tokyo (23 dollars one way). So consider that.

Hotel depends on where you stay. There's a ryokan called Ryokan Kangetsu in the Ota ward that charges 6700yen per night. Small room, but very Japanese style. They're also pretty friendly with foreigners.

    Good luck.
