I'm a new mom, who is going through a divorce. I want to go to college so I can have a career to better my son's and I's life. I have no money and I don't know where to start. My career goal is to be a paramedic.

I realize there are grants and scholarships available, but who qualifies? What kind of college can i go to? When would I be able to start? Where do I start....

Sorry...I feel overwhelmed and a little depressed about not having more than a high school education....

  1. FAFSA, loans, and most states have a single parent scholarship. Just google it. I learned that I get more money because I have my boys than most others. Use this as a jumping off point and get your paperwork done early.

  2. fill out the fafsa.. this will determine your amount for pell and possible loans. You will have to include your husbands income. HOwever, once the divorce is final, your school can declare a change in circumstances and change that to count only your income.. It takes a good 10-12 weeks to process that so there is NO way funds will be ready for fall. You would have to pay yourself and then the school would give you the check when they got it processed. If you plan to go in Jan.. fill this out NOW.. If you wait till next Aug. and can get it in by state deadlines (which vary by state) you may be able to get a state grant..

You can go to any college and take any program as long as it's at least a semester long and you get at least a certificate.. There are scholarships for single parents but deadline is usually March or May,, can't remember..

DHS has a program that will pay daycare for you IF you are in school.. this usually takes a while to process the paperwork too and it's usually low on funds and is first come first serve so contact them ASAP.  Apply for food stamps, WIC, whatever you need to to get thru school.  Paramedic has 3 stages to it.. EMT is 3 months. I think.. then EMT -A and paramedic is 18 months I think.. depending on hours on school. so take advantage of all the resources you can.. you will need them.. and if you qualify for food stamps, etc use them and be proud of it.. at least you are trying to better yourself..I am proud of you. It's hard to be a parent and REALLY tough to be a single parent.. You will be ok. If you need info you can write me.. GL

and don't forget to fill out your fafsa asap next year (get your taxes done early!)
