I live in Texas and go to the University of North Texas. I want to transfer to a school in California. I am thinking about Cal State at Long Beach. Any advice, suggestions, and comments will be appreciated. Thanks!

  1. Just remember that the cost of living is a lot higher here than in Denton or Texas for that matter.

For example, I pay $800 per month for a 400 square foot studio apartment and that is a normal rent here. It doesn't have a/c (I live 2 blocks from the beach and you do need an a/c) or a dishwasher and I have to park on the street. 1 Bedrooms start at $1000 and go up from there. A gallon of regular unleaded is $4.40 a gallon which is down from the $4.60 a gallon it was 2 weeks ago. Yes, you do need a car.

Food, entertainment, clothes, everything will cost 30-40% more here.

Most of Long Beach is also poor, working class ghetto neighborhoods. The closer you live to the beach the better the neighborhood. Unfortunately our beaches are some if the most polluted in the state and they have 'F' ratings. Nobody goes to the beach in Long Beach.

If you want a great beach college go to UC Santa Cruz, UC Santa Barbara or UC San Diego.

CSULB gets more applications than they can accept every semester. California residents get first priority before out of state students are considered.  Spring 2008 is already full.

I'm not trying to dissuade you from going, but trying to prepare you for the reality of Southern California living.

  2. um it will be a BIG difference but why not? it will probably be a lot more fun too.

  3. well....if this is what you want then go for it; if you feel that this college is the one, then nothing should stop you
