I want to go to study and live in Canada. How can I do this?

I live in Indiana, moving to Victoria BC in June. I know all the immigration laws and I have the school picked out. I need to get my student visa, but in order to pay bills, do I need to get a different visa to get a job? What about getting an apartment with my girlfriend (who lives where I will be studying... she's a Canadian citizen)? Do I need anything special for that? What about my credit score? How does that transfer over?

Sorry. I'm moving at the end of May and I'm trying to find answers to these questions that are hard to find answers to... I'm just trying to get a plan together before taking this huge step in my life.
