Question:

I want to go to the Rio Carnival?

I have never been outside the USA, but I would really like to visit the Rio Carnival.

However, although my boyfriend speaks a little Spanish I know that they don't speak that in Brazil.

So is Brazilian similar to Spanish, or will my boyfriend and me struggle to be understood ?

  1. if you knew basic or fluent spanish.. you would do fine..  but since you know just a little...  you should  start learning some important portuguese phrases.   theres a cool website http://byki.com/ thats free to download.. its got cool audio.. flash cards and few other things.       if you have any questions.. feel free to message me.

    Boa Sorte

  2. Although Portuguese seems like Spanish, you will not have a hard time if you just speak in English. In my opinion, it will be a lot easier for you and for them.

A lot of Brazilians speak English and they prefer to speak English rather than speak Spanish.

  3. Brazilians speak Portuguese.  Surely you will encounter some people who speak some Spanish, but I wouldn´t count on it.  I´d say that English would be better to use (almost everyone in the touristy areas speak English), as it more widely taught since its the international language.

Just in case, buy a Portuguese phrasebook.  Try to get it in Brazilian Portuguese, as regular Portuguese is not necessarily the same.
