  1. I must agree with Dame Violetta de Barovia Re-al here. The loss of the Polytechnics in the early 90's and a general dumbing down of society to the point we see entertainment as a first choice career path causes me grave concern. The country is coming to the point where everyone is attending University but not studying anything of worth either for a pure academic value or for the betterment of industry and or manufacturing.

When the questioner appears unable to complete the question without using the spell check I would have doubts in the value of any course they are to complete and how they are able to bring anything of value to the work place. This is yet another symptom of the glossy magazine culture. Yes if you are talented in dance and performance please find a suitable dance school and from here perform for the entertainment of others. But I do believe that such courses / disciplines should not be the remit of a University.

  2. Are you in the UK?

If so - last time I knew (and things may have changed) - the main universities that did contemporary dance are:

    Surrey (Guildford)

    Roehampton

    Middlesex

    Liverpool John Moores

    Bretton Hall

There there are more vocational contemp dance schools:

    Laban (london)

    The Place (london)

Northern School of Contemporary dance (leeds)

I got a degree in dance (which contrary to what people say on here) - was a very worthwhile course in which I have sustained a successful career.

    Potential jobs:

    Choreographer

    dance Development Officer (local councils)

    freelance community dance artists

Freelance dance artist (with focus on education)

My parents were hesitant at first - dad made me attend a computer course over the summer holidays after I graduated - 'just in case'.  And now are very proud of what I do and recognise that it is a 'proper' job.  If you need any more help - let me know.

  3. dance is something that is not greatly explored it is part of mating rituals in animals and also displays of joy it is something that is beautiful and interesting and it has its place as far as supply and demand are concerned dance is like salt too much is not good for you in order for you to make it in dance as in any performing art you usually have to be exceptional and be accepted at a school with a very good reputation like Julliard otherwise you will probably be wasting your time.

  4. Performing courses at Universities tend to be more or less c**p. Try to get into a specific performing arts college, you'll only be disappointed at a university.

  5. Some universities do have Dance programmes but they are usually combined with Theatre Studies. So if you don't mind that, you could get some university prospectus books to see what it offers and what it could do for your career. Or you might prefer Dance Schools, it would be more focused on dancing.

  6. omg, the guys here who are saying dance is 'dumbing down' universities are pretty stupid themselves.

they obviously dont realise who much dedication, skill, energy and precision danicng takes. university students are usually regular people, who study revise and pass exams, whilst watching loads of telly, drinking partying and meddling in drugs, whilst a studying dancer would have to eat healthyly , drink very rarely, leave drugs the h**l alone, and practise even when they dont have class!

sorry i just had to say this cos the narrow minded people above really anoyed me !

okay but back to your question, to take dance this further as a potential life career you have to have proven you can do it to yourself, and only you can tell. you have to be dedicated.

from dance you can acually go into a lot of careers, as a backing dancer(like dance films, pop concerts, music videos), dance chorus member(like in shows such as billy elliot), dance choreographer (setting up your own dance studio, working for someone else in thier studio, working freelance directing music videos/popconcerts/films etc) or even do soemthing like work with a dance company doing administraion/journalism etc. there are loads!

another way you can broaden is if you were to take a dance and drama or a performing arts course then you would have even more oppertunities!

look t these website for ideas, and dont be afraid to email the head and ask any questions or for a prospectus!

also i dont know how old you are but if your under 16, try the brit school for sixth form!

    good luck x

  7. You need to go to a school of dance if you want to be a dancer. There is a dance school at the bottom of my street that teaches everything from hip hop dancing to breakdancing.I think you shoukd go to a dance school and study somthing else at uni, study somthing that will be usefull to you in the future. If your a good dancer you might get a career out of it.Good luck

  8. yes you can go the university for dance

but it is not main things..

  9. I live in the US. Many professional dancers go to college

( college and university are the same thing here) for a dance major. It is becoming more and more popular. Many colleges here have excellent dance departments. Some specialize in ballet, or jazz, or modern or theatrical dance.

With a dance major you can preform, audition for a dance company, choreograph. Get in to theatre, open a studio. teach. Our high school had a dance teacher.  Some of us were able to take dance class instead of gym for High school.

Many college web site will list jobs that students have gone on to do after graduation. Call the universities by you. Here sometimes they will have a student in the major you are interested in call or email you to answer questions. Talked to the dance professors at the university and ask what students have gone on to do.

Try doing a small business minor. It will help if you ever open a studio. Or minor in something alittle more main stream

One guy I know graduated from the University of Indiana. He was in a small dance company. He also did several guest performances in the area-which he is paid for. He dances in our Nutcracker Ballet every December. And this past year he opened his own studio.

My daughter is going to minor in dance. We have gone to several colleges to see their dance departments. The one at Butler University is huge. At least a third is male. They put on major ballets at the college. Arizona State University's dance department is well reconized for excellence.

  10. Why can't people understand that Universities are for Academic study???... people wanting to do degrees in Acting and Dance etc, are just dumbing down the system. Universities offer these courses becuase needs must and they have to make money, but if the demand wasn't there, they'd go back to offering sound Academic qualifications. If you want to dance, got bloomin' dance school... or your local disco and stop wasting Universities' time...
