I am on http://www.vegcooking.com/veganMenus.asp and it says to start off eating vegan you should have fruit for breakfast, even a banana muffin. But I'm so weird and I hate fruit. I can put up with berries, but is there anything else I can have for breakfast that is healthy? Thanks!

  1. Uh oh, is this the tip of the .Oprah time sensitive vegan experiment? At least she is going for 21 days -- why only one week? You don't like fruit? OK so Tomato Sandwiches are out. Pity. I love them for Breakfast.

So do what you like. Porridge? Cooked Oatmeal?

Use Hemp Milk for great protein, or Soy or Rice of Almond. Add a hand full of nuts?

Or Brown Rice and Carrots glazed with Maple Syrup and Organic unrefined Corn Oil?

    Experiment and have fun.

  2. a lettuce a day

  3. Well it really depends how much time you have to eat breakfast. If you're in a rush maybe you could have a nutty cereal bar (one without fruit bits of course). Maybe just cereal with soya/wheat milk. I like to have soya milkshake on cereal instead because i don't really like the taste of soya milk as much. Or you could try plain yogurt on top (add sugar though because it's quite bitter).

At the moment though i just like to simply have toast for breakfast (with dairy free spread). It's easy to find vegan bread in shops.  Good luck with it i think it's good you're trying it out for a week :)

  4. I would strongly recommend that you develop a liking for fruit. Surely there's a fruit that you like?

Listen to Maggie's advice! Maggie is absolutely right- fruit is an essential part of the diet.

If you think you hate fruit, maybe you should try smoothies? Smoothies are surprisingly high in fibre.

I like mango ones, they're really tasty. Fruit Juice perhaps?

I hope this doesn't sound mean, I just have to emphasise this point: Taking supplements DOES NOT make up for the antioxidants, fibre, vitamins & minerals from actual fruit.

    Good luck : )

  5. There is no reason that you have to eat fruit for breakfast.

I am a vegan and I eat fortified cereal or oatmeal with soy milk and sugar every morning for breakfast.  Then for lunch I eat something like pb & j or pb and ricemallow.  If I don't feel like eating that I can have a salad or leftovers.

Then for dinner I make my family stuff like mac and soy cheese with stewed tomatoes, vegan chili, tacos, or sloppy joes, pasta and tomato sauce, soy cheese pizza, and vegetable stir fry.

Very rarely do we sit down and eat a bowl of broccoli or anything boring.  After a while we have gotten so used to it that we don't have to think twice about what is vegan.

We do enjoy fruit, but fruit isn't something you have to have.  I hope you like orange juice though because it's really healthy for you.

Good luck and do what makes you happy!

  6. Vegan breakfasts are really easy for me, actually.

I usually make oatmeal and toss in some berries and walnuts.

I like to make toast with peanut butter and jam.

Sometimes if I have time I make tofu scramble, which is a lot like scrambled eggs, and I add in veggies too.

I might have cereal with soy milk.

Sometimes I just have a tall glass of juice and a bagel if I'm on the run.

Really, there's no rule that you can only have breakfast food for breakfast anyway. Feel free to have a sandwich or leftover veggie burgers or whatever you could possibly want.

But I would really advise you to eat fruit. They're so good for you - fruits and vegetables are essential. Try to fit them in any way you can - maybe dip apple slices into peanut butter, or keep a plastic bag full of cherries and grapes with you so you can snack on it. Eat 3 fruits a day, your body will thank you. You'll get used to it, they're full of water, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. It's NEVER equivalent to take supplements or shakes in the place of fruit and vegetables.

  7. If you "should" have fruit for breakfast, then a lot of vegans I know aren't actually vegan after all... really, those menus are just a suggestion.  You should really try to find ways to incorporate fruit into your day because it's full of so much good stuff that you aren't going to get elsewhere.  The good news is that berries are packed with phytonutrients, so eat as many as you can put up with.  But, you don't have to eat fruit with or for breakfast.  Have a veggie with breakfast if you prefer that - I make scrambled tofu and add a couple of big handfuls of chopped spinach at the end and just wilt it right in there.  Smoothies are a good suggestion because, unlike juice, they use whole fruit.  Or make blueberry muffins instead of banana.  Oatmeal or whole grain toast with peanut butter are filling breakfasts, even without the addition of fruit.

  8. Grated potato pancakes can be served with syrup on them.......I would say with applesauce or ketchup too..........but that is a fruit.  Or just a little sea salt and pepper.

  9. Salad, soup, Protein Shakes,. It really depend on what you want to eat
