Question:

I want to grow a rose up my house front but the house stands on hard foundations. How do I overcome this?

The house has a sort of narrow gravel trench all around it, and I'm wary of digging into it and bridging the damp course. Could I grow a large rose in a pot and if so how big would it need to be to grow all the way up the front of the house, or should I just dig a small hole in the gravelled area?

Thanks

  1. I do not know the climate conditions, or the height you would like the rose to get, but I assure you that a pot is unlikely to work.

Do not dig up the gravel.

Can you dig a small hole past the gravel and plant it there?

Roses need structure, and it is simple to angle the trellis toward the house.  I had more compliments on the rose that I grew that way than on any other shrub in my yard.

  2. get a long deep planter box and put diff roses in it..

  3. A raised garden would be ideal, or a very large pot,at least 80cms wide. But I would go with a raised garden

  4. I don't know. But if you find a way, plant a red rose lass.

  5. Don't dig in the gravel area - that's there for a reason. If you mess around with it, you mess around with the drainage around your house, and that's never a good idea.

You can plant the rose in a large pot but it would have to be a VERY large pot if you want to have roses all the way up the front of the house. Or you could make a large window box (much deeper than the traditional window boxes) and place that on top of the gravel and plant your roses there.
