What fruit will i be able to plant in summer in northern virginia?

also, if i put a strawberry in the ground, would strawberries start growing?

  1. You can grow apples, pears, peaches, plums, cherries, nectarines, persimmons, quinces, raspberries, blackberries, black raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, melons of all sorts....pretty much all fruit excluding tropical ones like banana, coconut, guava, etc.

    For strawberries, the best way to start a patch is to buy plants, or bare roots, in spring.  Plan for about 25 plants per person who likes to eat them in your household.

    Melons, watermelons & such are annuals.  Plant the seeds directly in the ground when danger of frost is past.

    For fruit trees - plant in spring, as that is usually when you can find young trees available.  If you can FIND them in the fall, that's a good time to plant, too.

    The other berries that are brambles - usually canes and plants can be found in the spring.
