I have 3 Bradford Pear trees in my front yard that I planted about 6 years ago.Now I want more of them, but I dont want to buy them from companies or other people that grow them.I want to grow them myself, but how do I get seeds from them?

Right now they look like this....http://www.uafortsmith.edu/attach/Arboretum/OrnamentalPear-Bradford/OrnamentalPearBradfordTree.jpg

and they have things(fruit or seeds) on them that look like this....http://www.cas.vanderbilt.edu/bioimages/p/wpyca80frinfruct38700.jpg

1.)How do I get seeds from them?

2.)When I do get the seeds from them..do i have to dry the seeds out?

3.)When do I plant the seeds in pots before re-planting them into the ground?

I would love any help I can get,Thanks

  1. you can't because Pyrus calleryana 'Bradford' pear is a cultivar.  it's seeds will be callery pear. cuttings are easy to root

  2. Foirstly Bradford pears are not grown from seed. A cutting from a Bradford Pear is grafted onto a rootstock(some other pear most likely some kind of siberian pear). The seeds you get from your tree will not grow a tree exactly the same as the parent tree.

I didn't look at your pic's but bradford pears have tiny little pears and seeds are in them.  To get the seeds wait untill fall and they fall off the tree.  I am not sure how to make the seeds grow. You might have to leave the seeds in a cold or cool place over the winter. Maybe the coatings of the seeds may have to be scratched. Once the fruit freezes it will become soft and you can remove and wash the seeds.  Seeds will be hard and fruit will be soft.  Soaking the seeds in water overnite before planting will help.  Plant the seeds in a shallow pot in potting soil. Plant lots of seeds not just one. Keep the soil moist but not wet.  When the plants come up transplant them into larger pots 1 tree per pot.  Good luck although your seeds will not grow bradford pears If you plant enough of them or are lucy you might get a tree that is even better.

You could also try cutting some twigs off the tree in the fall, loose there leaves. after they Soak them in water and dip them in a rooting powder. then put them in a mix of sand and potting soil.  Dampen the soil and cover them through the winter. Uncover them in spring and If they have roots pot them up individually.
