I can put them in large pots and move them into the greenhouse when it gets frosty. What it the best variety to grow for Christmas? I want something tasty and floury. Where can I get the seed potatoes from (N. Ireland).

  1. Take no notice of Sally, its a great idea, can't help you with the details but will be joining in when you do get some answers from knowledgeable people.

  2. Right l've done this a couple of times.Get a pot that does not get too cold,so not metal, and plastic is best.Do not use seed potatoes but get that nice floury heritage eating one from sainsbury or any other will do maybe charlotte. No need to chit them.If the pot is  16 inches high say, then 2 inches of compost,no soil, place the spuds down and slightly cover the tops.Water and leave. After 3 weeks growth will appear above the compost.Cover slightly again, this time they will resurface much quicker and so keep covering lightly until you get to the top.Keep watered, but not too much as wet compost will attract fungal problems.Put in the hottest.sunniest most protected place.Make sure the water drains freely from the bottom. In Early/mid oct bring them indoors in a light warm place. If they get too leggy than cut growth before flower appears and it will re-flower at a shorter height.Do it straight away and set you digging up date to Xmas morning. No peeping before, just let it be a good surprise or a disappointment.Carrots and even beans also can work.Remember me christmas day, when your tucking in

  3. Give them a couple of days in the fridge to make them think they have been through winter and get them planted before the end of this month. Varieties- have you any Sharpes left - it is otherwise difficult to get early seed at this time of year. I already have mine in !
