  1. well just connect the pcs/laptops to the switch and the router('s) will give the machines all the correct ip addresses.

and on the games just network and the machines will see each other. and will be able to play..

  2. Plug them all into the switch making sure they all have the same subnet mask settings: I'll give you an example of this with my network:

My router/ default gateway has the IP 192.168.0.1, all the machines have an IP address 192.168.0.X where X is an unused number between 2(remember the router is .1) and 254 (.255 is actually a broadcast address and thus is unusable). The subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 on all the machines and the default gateway is 192.168.0.1.

What else... You'll need to allocate one machine as a server, typically this is a machine nobody logs onto (it's faster this way) and ideally needs the good hardware, specifially a good network card - a wireless laptop will not do here... Check IP addresses on all machines first, make sure they can all ping the router and then run the game, click LAN game and you should just have one host, it's not too hard to figure, machines able to share data are able to 'LAN party' without any problems at all, so if you have a switch I'll assume you have more than one computer, all the computers on your network are already able to communicate (and thus LAN party).

By the way, as you already have a switch i'm sure you also own a router, but you need private IP addresses for all the machines which means a router capable of doing NAT (as i said, you've got a switch so you probably already have a NAT router). Private IP addresses are: 192.168.x.x and 10.x.x.x where the x's are any number from 1 to 254.
