For me and my husband's 1 year wedding anniversary later on this year, we want to have a private party on a new york city cruise ship. i just called "the circle line" but they are charging $5000 for 3 hours! Are there any less expensive alternatives that you know of? We really want this party to be affordable yet meaningful. Any suggestions will be great even if it doesn't involve cruise ships. Thanks.

  1. What in God's name am I hearing? You've got enough bloody money you capitalist plunderer of the proletariat to throw a debauched party for yourself and your debutants on a CRUISE SHIP of all things, and you want MY help....a poor drunken writer from the "other side of the railroad tracks" who hasn't enough bloody money in me bank to purchase a plastic tugboat for me bubblybath?  I should say not!  You'll just have to throw your bloody party without me, besides you forgot to invite me! Help you? I'd sooner be boiled in cod liver oil or have me bloody intestines ripped out by Jason's machete.

  2. Thats a tough one to find cheap. Maybe you can locate a guy who owns a large size boat that he would rent out to you, He would serve as the captain. That may be cheaper but harder to locate. Try www.craigslist.org  under boats. There may be stuff like that there.

  3. Well, I wouldn't really call the Circle Line a cruise ship.  It's small and doesn't have overnight facilities, so it's more of a sight-seeing tour boat.

Unfortunately, real cruise ships are at least an overnight commitment.  And out of New York I couldn't find anything shorter than 4 nights, which would definitely blow your budget if you're paying for other people.

Parties in NYC are darned expensive, mainly because of the facility.

So here's my suggestion: If you or any of your friends have an apartment that would be suitable, I'd have the party there and spend your money on awesome food, drinks, decoration and entertainment.  For $5k you should be able to do something fabulous.

  4. A few years ago my sibs and I hosted a party for my Mom's 75th birthday.  We chartered a small boat out of New Rochelle.  Sailed around the Statue of Liberty...this was spectacular a year after 9/11, the city lights at night were beautiful.   I think the cost was about $800 at the time and I think the boat could accomadate 50.  We provided the bar and the food ourselves.  It was a very memorable party.  The name of the company was Shamrock "something".  Good Luck!
