  1. My mother made me a quilt using a photo transfer type squares, however after several years of normal wear it has lost all the images and no longer has any photo's on it. I do not see any of these other ideas solving this problem. unless the quilt is to be put in a case maybe another idea is in order.

  2. I have made many of these and this is the method that works best for me. Purchase a 200 thread count cotton. Usually an off white (muslin color) works the best with most photos. Next wash the fabric and dry but do not use fabric softeners. They leave a barrier on the fabric and the colors will not adhere as well. Now is the time to cut out your squares or rectangles of fabric (depending on your quilt design/plan) but be sure to allow about an inch extra around each square. Then I take them to a copier business...they do the best job! The photos turn out exactly like the originals. Word to the wise...if a t-shirt with a saying or license plate on car are in photo; make sure they do not get printed backwards! Once printed, then square up the fabric blocks allowing 1/4" seam allowances around the entire block. Sew them into a quilt top and enjoy! Good luck to you.

  3. There  are lots of ways to transfer the family photos to fabric squares to be able to piece them together to make the quilt.

A few that I know of include printing the photos on regular photo paper then using Modge Podge to attach them to fabric squares but this technique is messy, somewhat time consuming and in all reality, probably not a good idea for a quilt.

Another technique that I know of, but have never tried is a type of transfer.  Again, you would print the photos on paper, spread the transfer solution on the entire picture and then turn it over and put it on the fabric.

The  two best, and simplest, ideas that I know of would be to purchase fabric sheets that you can run through your printer.  Use a high quality photo ink to print on the fabric, then assemble using your favorite quilting technique.  Or, purchase iron on t-shirt transfers to transfer the photos to fabric squares.

If you are looking to have someone else make the quilt for you, I would provide them with digital copies of the family photos and let them use the technique that they are most familiar with.

Good luck.  I hope my information has been helpful.

  4. I get white Egyptian cotton (they sell it with the muslin) and cut it into rectangles, 7 X 10 inches. I prepare the fabric with Bubble Jet Set. I buy mine at a quilting shop but they also have it at http://dharmatrading.com.

Then I iron freezer paper to the back of each rectangle. Then I tape that to card stock with one long piece of tape across the top, and print the pictures out of my computer. You have to make sure you have enough ink and use the thickest paper setting on your printer.

After it's printed, tear away the freezer paper and you're ready to piece the pictures with other fabrics to make your quilt.
