okay so this is my first hamster. shes small because shes not an adult yet, but shes not a babyy. her name is nella:) i want to pick her up but im scared of dropping her. i pick her up by her stomach with my two fingers and she just leaps out of my hand and i dropped her from about 2 feet high. horrible, yes i know. i dont know how to hold her right! you might think im a bad owner, but she loves me and we so far have a pretty good bond. i want to hold her correctly and stroke her. i read other questions and they say to cup and scoop your hamster with your two hands. my cage wont allow me to do that though! i have the deluxe hamster cage. tips on how to hold her with this cage, and to not let her fall when i attempt to pick her up?

cage i have for nella: http://www.petsmart.com/graphics/product_images/pPETS-3763835t400.jpg

  1. Pick her up slowly and put treats in your hand. Like Cheerios.  She will like those.  Don't touch her stomach.

  2. Try picking her up in an old coffee mug. She's less likely to fall and she can't bite you. When you hold her, keep her against your chest.

  3. You can do it with ONE HAND, but NOT TWO FINGERS..

Just pick her up like you're holding a computer mouse..

(They are from the same species though..)

And place her in your other hand..

If she is moving, just place another hand and continue with another hand and another and another..

They like to walk around a lot..

Or I'll say my Syrian like to walk around a lot..

Because I've read that others hamster stay so still on the hands...

    ??

    GOOD LUCK though..

  4. you could probably get your hands in there to scoop her up if you tried hard enough. Dont use just two fingers to pick her up. Put all four under her stomach on one side, and put your thumb under her stomach on the other side. Then just hold on tight, but not too tight, and lift her up quickly. You know those arcade games with the claws that grab stuffed animals or candy? Well, your making your hand act sorta like that. So your palm would be touching the hamsters back when you pick her up. It would look somewhat like this

  5. best thing to do is

put ur right hand on the cage floor area and make ur hamter go to ur hand and if the hamster is already in ur right hand support ur hamster with ur left hand and thats it

    ^_^ hope u understand ^_^

  6. Let her walk up to your hand so you dont scare her then gently put one hand under her body and cup the other hand over her body its the safest way to hold a hamster

    i hope i helped

  7. hhhmmm I've had problems getting my hammy out of her cage as well. She can be very stubborn. lol What mine does is she sleeps in the corner and when I reach in to get her she either refuses to budge or tried to go under her wheel. So I normally have to grab her around the stomach (as gently as possible) and then pull her out that way. It's usually the only way I can get her out of her cage. What you could do is buy her a tiny little house to put in her cage. Then when you want to pick her up, put a piece of food in the house to lure her in, and then pick up the house, (with her in it of course) and take it out of the cage. That way you wouldn't have to worry about dropping her. Good luck with your hammy! :)

  8. Just grab her quickly. Keep her close to you when you hold her, make sure she knows your scent. If you don't handle her now she will start biting when she grows older.

    Good Luck!

  9. The best way I advise customers to handle their new hamsters is to use a mug and perswade them into it and then place them on your bed. Offer her lots of nice treats so she can associate getting in the cup with getting nice food. This way you can sit and stroke you hamster without it running into a tube etc Eventually your hamster will get used to being handled and will allow you pick it up without the use of the mug. Just take your time and your new hamster will soon come around :)

  10. First let her sniff your hand to know the scent. she may climb onto your hand if not gentle pick her up. If you cant scoop her then try to gently pick her up by the stomach. When you pick her up keep her close to your chest so she doesnt fall easy.
