I want to hook my computer up to my HDTV. Y buddy told me to get a video card and use s-video cables.?

does it matter how nice of a video card i get as long as it has s-video? i mainly want to stream video to my tv which is about 20 feet away/

  1. All you need is an S-video cable, the TV will not play the sound though.

If you have an HDTV you should really consider using a DVI output from the video card to an HDMI input on the TV.  The TV is much higher resolution than the S-video cable supports.  Most decent video cards have a DVI output.  You will need a DVI to HDMI adapter cable.  Check www.newegg.com for the best prices.

  3. You absolutely do not want to connect your HDTV to your computer with an S-video cable. It will produce very poor results, especially compared to your other video sources. HDMI, DVI or even VGA is the way to go, depending on what inputs your TV has.  As for the distance limitations with DVI, you should be able to stretch it 20 ft. especially if you have a good DVI cable.

  4. Yooperje...  is right but didn't warn you about maximum DVI cable length. You should check what resolution you want to output because in high resolution the DVI cable is limited to 15ft.

    If your computer is 20ft away please make sure that the cable you get will will support that distance or work in a lower resolution
