  1. If you have a free PCI slot on each computer all you would need is a PCI WI-FI card for each and a wireless router.

Something like the Linksys WRT54g and 2 Linksys WMP54g. I would go with the 802.11g protocol as the newer faster 802.11N is not a protocol yet it is still in the beginning stages of its life and no one has agreed to a single set of standards. If you want more speed get yourself a Netgear Rangemax Wireless Router WPN824 This offers speeds almost that of a wired Ethernet network. Then You would get two Netgear WPN311 PCI cards for the PC.

If you do not want to crack the case and install PCI cards that is cool many people do not want to do that. You can pick up USB adapters like the Netgear WPN111.

Once you get your wireless network up and running you need to enable proper security measures. The easiest and least secure mode is WEP (Weired Equivalency Protocol) which gives you low lever security that of an unprotected wired network. I prefer and run WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) this is a much stronger and harder to crack security measure. You will set a password that each computer will use to access the network. You will need to make this long really long like a complete sentence with Upper and lower case letters, numbers, and special characters. It should look something like this.

  2. Hello, to connect 2 computers with your router you need just the router and 2 Ethernet cables and then make sure both computers have a Network card which is not the same as a modem card, modems have RJ11 connector (same as landline telephone) and network are RJ45 wider than RJ11. But this is only if you want to go wired.

If you want to go wireless you'll need either a wireless card or USB wireless stick on each computer, but in order to setup your wireless network settings you'll need to be wired on your first computer, after the settings are done you can be wireless on both.

I would dare to say that 99% of actual wireless routers are hardware firewalled so don't worry about that as long as you get a brand new wireless router you'll be good to go.

  3. If you want to use a wireless router wirelessly, you need wireless cards in your computers.  It sounds like your equipment is pretty outdated, but if you have an ethernet card, probably a 10/100, in the computers, you could probably hook them up to a wireless router with a network cable IF  the router has ethernet ports.  But it won't be truly wireless.
