I immigrated in US 5 years ago and I'm going to stay because I received my green card. My English is relatively good, but I have an accent and sometimes my English is not totally fluent or I have hard time finding the right words to describe something complex. I'm a Psychologist and I'm working with people and it bothers me if I can't explain myself as fast and as clearly as I would like to.

I thought about hiring a speech therapist and see if I can improve that way. Any suggestions? Is the speech therapist a good idea?

  1. Why not just .. talk a lot.. and try to imitate American accents..

That's what Grandpa Kleusner ( a distant relative) did in the 1930s, and it worked well for him....

He did it in Tennessee and Kentucky though, German and Redneck are not a good combination.....

  2. Just repeat "How Now Brown Cow"

    :)

  3. A speech therapist sounds like a great idea! If you are really dedicated to doing that that is. Otherwise, there are some great computer programs (e.g. Rosetta Stone) and TV programs that will help you improve. If you don't want to spend a fortune, just merely listen to other people talk!

You'll be a natural in no time :)
