I want to improve my strokes my current times are:

Free:34.16

Back:45.50

Breast:43.79

Fly:38.30

I am 17 male and I swim 4 times a week for 1:30 hours on a summer team.

Are my times good? I know they arent as good as they could be thats why I want to improve them. I know this really is a very large question sorry.

I also want to improve my dive when I dive I dont get very far off the block and most of the time I end up doing a half belly flop :( Also I dive with both feet on the front of the block NOT like a runner start.

Hope you can help and if you need more info let me know,

  1. What is the distance that you are swimming? That plays a part in if the times are good.

If you want to get faster I would suggest lifting weights. Low weight with a lot of reps. Or you could use kickboards and pullboys to improve your arms and leg and swim at the same time. To improve diving it might help if you try standing with one foot back, I not sure but you could give it a try.

  2. Obviously, you are not a backstroker.  The best way to improve is to focus.  You might want to start by focusing on just one event, the one you are best at.  Then work with your coach and break down that stroke.  Work on the pull, then on the kick, then on putting it together.  Work on the start and then on the turn and then on the underwater recovery.  Swim more on your own to increase endurance or speed or both using some of the drills you have learned at practice.

  3. You're right, that is a really big question.  There are some videos on the following website http://www.goswim.tv/entries/s/1/drills.... that have drills, tips and training ideas.

  4. Um, I'm sorry but I don't think your times are very fast. I'm a 13 year old girl and my 50 yard times are:

    Free: 28.90

    Breast: 32.90

    Fly: 31.35

When you dive make sure you use your legs and arms to throw yourself forward, tuck your head, and it doesn't matter if you do both feet forward or the runner start. I know good swimmers that do both. If you really want to improve then you should join a year around swim team, try your hardest when you're practicing and work really hard. Hope this helps and is there a particular stroke that you want to improve on?
