I want to invest...but i know nothing about investing...where do i start??

I was planning on starting off small and only investing more IF I make more...but HOW do I invest if I want to do it on my own? The newspaper? Online? Is there a free way to start (I mean as far as fees, not talking about the money actually being invested)...?

I already have a good idea about WHAT I would invest in...just don't know much about the way investing works. None of my family or friends do it.
