First you need to know the strategy. There are various stock pick strategy, which are:

• Fundamental analysis , buying stock with good financial fundamental.

• Technical Analysis , buying stock based on previous price data.

• Value Investing , buying stock which is undervalued. Warren buffet the greatest investor uses this strategy.

You get a broker, and then buy your stock through him. Study first and get your knowledge down pat and then maybe play around with imaginary money first. You can make money if you are cautious rather than reckless.

Check out the Motley Fool site.  They have a great introductory information and make good recommendations.  I recommend starting with mutual funds as a savings vehicle.  They are most stable and help you learn about the market.
