  1. If you're in the US, I would start an IRA using a mutual fund.  Find a mutual fund company that has a low cost index fund or two, and invest in them.  There are several such funds - I like TIAA-CREF, Vanguard, and Fidelity, but there are others out there.  You could start an IRA in more than one mutual fund company too - this would give you some diversification, which is always important.

An index fund is one that invests in the stocks of a particular stock index - the Dow Jones is one - the Standard and Poors 500 is another.  The costs to run the funds are VERY low compared to other funds, which means they tend to outperform others in the long term.  Invest a set amount every month, whether the market is up, down, or sideways, and you can do well.

And as always - the best person to help you is you yourself.  You need to educate yourself on investing.  You can start online, but look further afield.  Try a Dummies book, or reading books and magazines, too.  You can learn a lot, and hopefully help yourself out.
