I live and work in Sugar Land. My cycling brother in California suggested buying a Hybrid as a starter bike. I just don't know how to get involved in cycling as a beginner.

  1. just amke sure you've got a bike. get out there and ride. if you have a look on the internet you'll soon find a local cycling club. most re very welcoming and will gve you an idea of the fitness required for club rides.

  2. First, get a bike you are comfortable with.  A hybrid is a good compromise in that you can ride it on hardpack roads or city streets or even on slower bike club rides.

Once you are comfortable riding it (I don't recommend clug/group rides until you are) look for a local bike club. They all vary but most reasonable sized clubs run group rides based on average speed capability of the members. Many will also teacj you how to ride in a group.

After that it's really a question of showing up for rides, joining with those intending to ride at a speed you are comfortable with (if any doubt go with a slower group), and talking and learning from other iders. Don't be afraid to admit you are new ... cyclists love to teach new riders what they know.

If there is no local group bike shops often organize rides (although these often attract faster riders so take care), or even putting up a sign at a local store may help identify others looking for riding partners. If all else fails try talking to riders you see around your area ... they may know of groups.

    Hope that gives some ideas.
